I know from my discussions with students and faculty at Texas State, UT, St. Eds, HTU, and ACC, how important student financial assistance is not only to individual opportunity, but in keeping our universities and community colleges sparkplugs of economic development and job creation. While I know that in our current economic situation we must ferret out wasteful spending, these federal student financial aid programs are not where cuts should be made— those who argue states and parents should shoulder the responsibility of paying for college are not only interested in taking America back but taking it backward. If parents and states could shoulder this responsibility alone, these loan programs wouldn’t have been set up in the 1950s on a bipartisan basis.
